Demonstration Project Outcomes

To address older driver safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) supported Dr. Anne Dickerson through a cooperative agreement to implement a demonstration project promoting Highway Safety Guideline #13: Older Driver Safety. 

Guideline #13 offers recommends the key components of a State older driver safety program and the criteria that the program components should meet.  The eight components include:  program management, roadway design, driver licensing, medical providers, law enforcement, social and again services providers, communication and program evaluation and data. 

Dr. Dickerson’s demonstration project covered four of these areas:  

  1. Driver licensing by improving access for medically at-risk older drivers to obtain get a comprehensive driving evaluation.
  2. Education for Law Enforcement by revising the NC State Highway Patrol HP 640 form and expanding its use.
  3. Education for Medical Providers by educating physicians and other providers on how to effectively report to the Medical Review Unit of the NC Department of Motor Vehicles and creating a educational module for First Responders
  4. Education for Social and Aging Services by creating a positive message logo for transportation planning and an interactive website for planning and intervention services.
