Demonstration Project Outcomes
To address older driver safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) supported Dr. Anne Dickerson through a cooperative agreement to implement a demonstration project promoting Highway Safety Guideline #13: Older Driver Safety.
Guideline #13 offers recommends the key components of a State older driver safety program and the criteria that the program components should meet. The eight components include: program management, roadway design, driver licensing, medical providers, law enforcement, social and again services providers, communication and program evaluation and data.
Dr. Dickerson’s demonstration project covered four of these areas:
- Driver licensing by improving access for medically at-risk older drivers to obtain get a comprehensive driving evaluation.
- Education for Law Enforcement by revising the NC State Highway Patrol HP 640 form and expanding its use.
- Education for Medical Providers by educating physicians and other providers on how to effectively report to the Medical Review Unit of the NC Department of Motor Vehicles and creating a educational module for First Responders
- Education for Social and Aging Services by creating a positive message logo for transportation planning and an interactive website for planning and intervention services.
