Learning from Law Enforcement

In 2016, one of the occupational therapy students had an idea for having a session with ECU police officers.  She contacted their office and arranged for a one hour lecture/discussion and then role playing “traffic stops” with the Bootcamp participants.  Since that time the activity has been a highlight of every camp. The ECU officers, who are full-fledged law enforcement officers, have gladly volunteered to interact with the participants.

The two hour session starts off with the officers providing a short informational lecture and then answering any questions participants have about tickets, crashes, and their roles as officers of the law. Everyone then gathers outside.  The participants are in a parked vehicle with the police vehicles behind them with their flashing lights.  Each participate has the opportunity to be “pulled over” and simulate a stop by an officer.   Both the participants, occupational therapy students and the police officers learn something new and this activity is one of the highlights of the Bootcamp!
