Community Mobility

Independence in community mobility is an important goal for the Bootcamp.  Thus, participants have ample opportunities to engage in learning and planning community mobility events through mini lectures and activities with the goal of understanding  various types of modes of transportation available and the skills needed for safe community navigation.  The learning activities include:

  • Using paper and electronic mapping applications to navigate the Greenville area
  • When and how to use buses, trains, bikes, cross walks, taxis, and ride hailing aps (e.g., Uber, Lyft)
  • Understanding the safety precautions for each of those modes of community mobility
  • Experience with using bus routes, schedules, and apps to arrange travel
  • Planning a trip to a city outside the area and choosing the most appropriate and cost effective modes of public transportation

The “capstone” of these learning activities is a trip on an ECU bus around the ECU and Greenville community to practice and demonstrate their developing skills.  In some cases, it is the first time the participants have been on a bus and is an important step in developing independence from their parents.  Understandably, the community mobility bus trip is often a favorite activity of participants.
