Hazards
Identification of hazards and response to them is a major theme of the Bootcamp. Responding appropriately to hazards is offered in a variety of learning strategies. Mini-lectures are used to discuss common hazards with activities following to have participants actively identify hazards and discuss the best response. For example, participants practice identifying hazards while watching driving videos and circling hazards that appear on the white board.
The participants also identify common traffic hazards using a bird’s eye view of maps, and use matchbox cars to problem solve appropriate actions. Other games are used (e.g., hazard word search, Jeopardy!, Drive Focus) as well as discussion specifically about “What do we do if?” Examples of this include: What do I do if I run out of gas, have an accident, get lost, have a flat tire, the weather suddenly changes, and other common types of problems.
